Character Shoes are a must-have for dancers preparing for ballet exams, stage performances, or national dancing shows. Available in both low heel (Grades 1–2) and high heel (Grade 3 and up), these shoes are the perfect complement to your character skirt — but before you step into the studio, there’s one last thing to do: sew on your elastics.
Why Should You Sew on Elastics to Your Shoes?
Elastics are necessary for a snug fit and keeping your shoe on your foot when dancing. Preventing it from slipping off during jumps, turns, and other dynamic movement. Elastics also provide additional support to the ankle and foot.
Character Shoes Elastic Sewing Instructions – How To Sew Elastics onto Your Shoes?
The process of sewing elastics onto your shoes is simple and easy.
To begin you will need:
- Character Shoe
- Elastic (sold separately)
- Needle and Thread
- Sewing Pin
- Pencil
- Scissors

Step 1:
Start by cutting your elastic (purchased from The Ballet Co) in half, this will give you one piece for each shoe.

Step 2:
Place the elastic through the eyelet on one side and use a sewing pin to hold it in place or use a pencil to mark where to sew on the elastic.

Step 3:
Using a needle and thread, sew the elastic in place.

Step 4:
Place your foot inside the shoe and pull the elastic straight over your foot (do not stretch the elastic). Insert the elastic into the eyelet and secure with a safety pin or use a pencil to mark where to sew. Remove your foot and carefully sew the elastic in place.

Step 5:
Place your foot in the shoe to ensure a snug yet comfortable fit. If so, you can cut off the remaining elastic and you are all done!
If the fit is too loose or tight, carefully undo the stitches of the elastic that was sewn on last and proceed through the steps again
